THE SATYAGRAHA HOUSE

The Satyagraha House was built in 1907 by the German architect, Hermann Kallenbach, a close friend of Mohandas ‘Mahatma’ Gandhi, who lived there from 1908 to 1909. The house, which is now part guesthouse part museum, is located in Johannesburg and was originally designed after a traditional African farm, called a Kraal.

If I could have a home built just like this and dropped right into my Southern California neighborhood I would be oh so happy! The simplicity of the architecture, black and white palette and mix of organic materials is simply beautiful. Click here to read more about this gem.

DEJA VU

You know the saying, “Out of something bad can come something good.” This rang true for my clients in Austin when their home became badly damaged a year ago by torrential rains. Everything that we had rehabbed three years prior was completely destroyed. So, when they asked me back to help fix what had been damaged, I was more than happy to come up with a new design for this wonderful family.

The overall interior color of the home was changed to a beautiful warm white. We went with darker floors, a new living room and a completely new kids’ bathroom — but I think I had the most fun in the kitchen.  With the first rehab we needed to work with the existing granite countertops and the original island position. This time, since we had to gut the entire kitchen, we were able to work with a blank canvas. My color palette was simple — a mix of creamy whites, antique brass, rattan and brick.

Below, my inspiration behind the kitchen — brick for the backsplash, paint from Farrow & Ball for the island, a creamy piece of stone for the countertops, as well as my brass bracelet (a stand in for the future hardware).

GRACIAS MADRE, WEST HOLLYWOOD

It seems like restaurant design only gets better and better and Gracias Madre is a perfect example. Previously an antique store, Gracias Madre is beautifully designed by interior designer Wendy Haworth and exterior designer Scott Shrader.

FAUX FLOWERS

In the past I’ve been quite adamant about only using real flowers in a home. However, faux flowers have changed, and let’s face it some of us are just too busy to keep up with it all.  A trip to your local farmer’s market or grocery store for fresh flowers before company arrives might not be realistic — the solution just might be some fake ones, why not?

Abigail Ahern, also an interior designer, stocks lovely fake flowers in her London shop.

 Most local floral/craft stores carry faux flowers, as well as Ikea. The trick to using fake flowers is to use what would typically be in season at the time (more believable). The brilliant thing about faux flowers is that they add a beautiful burst of color with little effort. Enjoy!

HOTEL FASANO LAS PIEDRAS

My recent hotel obsession is Hotel Fasano Las Piedras in Uruguay. This is another one by the Fasano Group. Known for their luxurious hotels in Sao Paulo and Rio De Janeiro, the Hotel Fasano Las Piedras is their first venture outside of Brazil. Designed by the Brazilian architect, Isay Weinfeld (who also designed the Fasano Sao Paulo), Las Piedras is situated on over 1100 acres. The amenities include an equestrian center, polo fields, boathouse, private beach and an incredible spa.
