A Gallery Wall provides us with a great opportunity to showcase our personal style, as well as some of our treasured photos and artwork.

When considering a gallery wall, there are several different styles you could choose from. You could go with a random order style, as in the photo above, or you could design a more organized gallery, as in the photo below.

Another option would be to use picture rails as shown below. The benefit to this is being able to rearrange your artwork anytime you want.

When designing a gallery wall, I tend to go with the more random style of gallery — and my approach is quite simple.

First, I have my client pull the photos and artwork that they want to use. Then I measure the space where the gallery will be displayed.

Next, I choose the color of frame that will work best with my client’s home. I then purchase different sizes of frames and always purchase extra (much easier to return the ones you don’t use then to keep running out for more).

I then use measuring tape, on the floor, to mark out the space (you could also you painter’s tape).

Next, start placing your frames. I normally go with about 5 to 6 inches of space between frames, but it really depends on the size of wall and personal preference.

After playing with the frames and finding the layout I want, I then photograph the layout (so I follow my plan), and proceed to hang one at a time, leaving the rest in their place.

For my Austin clients (below), I went with a simple black frame, but then added a couple of brass tone frames as an accent color.

Above, you can see how I use the measuring tape.

If my client doesn’t have enough artwork for all the frames, I’ll go ahead and hang the gallery and then use instructional post-it notes in the empty frames. This gives the client some direction, and allows them time to find just the right piece.

Today, I’ve got some super easy Holiday decorating ideas to share with you. This is my favorite time of year, but like so many out there, it’s tough to get everything done. Since this year has been a bit busier than normal, I’m depending on my easiest holiday ideas to help my own home feel more festive. I’m hoping that some of these ideas will inspire you as well.

Styling & Living

1.Wreaths

Besides the front door, I love using wreaths all over my home. I use them inside and out. I place them around candles, and on garden statues. I hang them from mirrors and on walls.

Above, I love how Design Sponge just plopped one on a table — fantastically easy.

2.Pinecones

thumb_dsc00481_1024

I typically have a basket of pinecones next to the fireplace, however they look good anywhere and in anything — from baskets & wooden bowls to glass jars and trays — I love the natural texture and look of them.

3.Votives

Candlelight around the home, especially this time of year, is so soothing. I use votives just about anywhere. I group them on trays, scatter them on my mantle, use them on the dining table and around the kitchen. This group of lovely votives I found at Marshall’s.

4.Ornaments

Another super easy but effective idea is placing some ornaments in a beautiful bowl or glass hurricane. This year I placed mine in a large antique wooden bowl I found on my recent trip to Texas.

5.Bulbs

Using bulbs around your home is super festive and easier than you think. Just make sure they have some light and water occasionally. Below, I love how they are placed in a wooden bowl with moss and ornaments.

6.Lights

Besides my Christmas tree, I use lights on whatever house plant I have at the time. Right now it’s the fiddle leaf fig, but I’ve used lights on some of my other indoor plants such as Olive, Boxwood & Ficus.

7.Nuts

I like to have a bowl of nuts around the home. It reminds me of being a kid — my grandmother always had a bowl out for all of us to enjoy. Cracking the shell while chatting with someone slows the day down nicely.

screen-shot-2016-12-14-at-4-07-24-pm

8.Tree Trimmings

I save all the trimmings from my tree and place them around the house, usually in planters or vases. I also tie them together with floral wire (or a rubber band) and hang them with a pretty ribbon. You can also place them on the ground around a lantern like in the photo below.

9.Food

The most important idea of all. Holiday foods make my kitchen more festive, and bring people together, especially this time of year. I keep a tray of coffee and tea items, for whenever family or friends pop over.

2015-holiday-decorating-trends-22

I’m finally getting around to decorating for the holidays this week.  This is the longest I’ve ever taken to get my home and myself ready for the holidays. My kids have not been very happy about this — so this week I’m on it, starting today.

For the most part, kitchen design tends to have a certain formula it follows — upper and lower cabinets, a natural stone countertop, tile backsplash, etc. Pushing the design boundaries in the kitchen can be a bit intimidating. The kitchen is one of those rooms in the house that is pretty permanent — once done it rarely changes. It’s also the most expensive room in the house to rehab; therefore, doing something atypical may seem too big of a risk? However, we spend so much time in our kitchens I really believe we should enjoy them as much as possible, and give them a bit of personality.

There are several ways to create an ‘atypical kitchen’. Some changes may be more permanent than others. The kitchens below are great examples of some of my favorite atypical kitchen ideas.

1.THE MORE PERMANENT ROUTE

2. THE LESS PERMANENT ROUTE

For less of a permanent route, you could use a gorgeous paint color on your cabinets, go for oversized light fixtures to make a statement or create your very own art gallery.

One of my favorites at the present, this kitchen is dark & lovely. I also really like how the designer used wall sconces to give it a soft and elegant feeling.

Also, don’t neglect to look at your favorite restaurant for ideas. These days designers are doing an incredible job with restaurant design, as in the photo above at Hard Water in San Francisco.

Have a wonderful Tuesday!

If you’re a fan of Fixer Upper on HGTV, you know what I’m talking about when I say ‘Farmhouse Chic’. We can thank Ms. Joanna Gaines for bringing style back to the farmhouse! She’s put Waco on the map and has made Waco way cool. She knows how to do more than mix and match pillows — she puts some gorgeous houses together and inspires me to keep focused.

I have to admit that this is one of my favorite “looks” at the moment. It’s clean, fresh and has a modern feel that isn’t too cold. With a bit of white paint and some pretty antiques, a simple structure can become your very own gorgeous art gallery.

Since Mondays are always a little difficult to stomach, I thought I would do a quick post on some of my favorite Pinterest pins from the weekend, along with my ideas behind them.

Screen Shot 2016-03-13 at 2.39.56 PM

Idea #1: A very clean and beautiful idea for a patio — using different size pavers, gravel to outline the seating area and trees to frame it!

Screen Shot 2016-03-13 at 2.38.30 PM

Idea #2: Paint a focal point wall a strong gorgeous color and then hang a collection.

Screen Shot 2016-03-13 at 2.25.07 PM

Idea #3: Add a picture shelf above the tub for artwork & candles.

Screen Shot 2016-03-13 at 2.17.41 PM

Idea #4: When designing a mother-in-law suite I sometimes have to include a small kitchenette — I like this idea of a small wall to separate main living area and kitchenette.Screen Shot 2016-03-13 at 2.01.07 PM

Idea #5: As many of us are looking for alternatives to grass these days, I love this simple and pretty idea of just rounded Pittosporum, bush germander and lavender. For those that want a bit more color, think about spreading plants out a bit more and adding your color in between.

Screen Shot 2016-03-13 at 2.03.50 PM

Idea #6: Another alternative to grass is adding some gravel, boxwood and a very zen like fountain — pretty.

Screen Shot 2016-03-13 at 2.15.52 PM

Idea #7: An easy way to add color and texture to a kitchen or bathroom is to add a fun and beautiful backsplash like the one in the photo above.

I hope this gave you a little inspiration as we head into another work week. Happy Monday!
