Happy Friday! If you’re looking for a place to unplug, unwind & get healthy in a gorgeous setting then the The Ranch Malibu is the place to go. I came across it several years ago because I love the work of Scott Shrader who did the landscape design for the The Ranch. However, as you’ll see in the photos below the interior design is just as beautiful!

Have a great Weekend!

When my girlfriends and I were in Laguna Beach a couple of weeks ago, we thought the idea of spending an entire day cooking a big meal, sipping wine and listening to good music sounded like an excellent way to spend a Saturday. So this past weekend we decided to try it out by inviting family & friends to help prepare an Italian feast.

The Menu:
Cheese & meat platter
Ravioli with sausage filling
Sausage Carbonara
Caprese salad
Mix green salad
Grilled zucchini
Tuscan steak
Limoncello Cake

Even though my house wasn’t perfect, and I should have spent half the day doing laundry, I’m glad I decided not pay attention to any of that and just enjoy an afternoon with family, friends and really good food. Cheers to taking more time out of our daily duties to enjoy long meals with family & friends!
Happy Thursday!

In honor of Cinco de Mayo, I’m sharing one of my favorite houses in Mexico — El Mirador House. Located in Valle de Bravo, a popular vacation spot just two hours southwest of Mexico City, El Mirador is a 5,000 square foot home by CC Arquitectos.

Arijiju is a beautiful private home, retreat and spa set in the Borana Conservancy in Kenya’s Laikipia County. There’s an understated elegance to the design of Arijiju and its unobtrusive structure seems to blend seamlessly into Kenya’s landscape. The architecture is by Alex Michaelis of London-based Michaelis Boyd and Johannesburg-based architect Nick Plewman. The interior design is by Maira Koutsoudakis of Life Interiors Architecture Strategic Design. Scroll down to see more of this gorgeous retreat.

Happy Friday! Every year at this time The Garden Conservancy organizes tours of gorgeous private gardens all over the country. I’ve been attending these tours for about 6 years now and I always walk away inspired! This Sunday is the Pasadena (California) tour so I thought I would share some ideas from a gorgeous Pasadena estate I toured several years ago.

I loved this custom-made trellis (above) and how it framed the entry to the home so beautifully.

They also added this gorgeous climbing rose, ‘Eden’ from David Austin Roses, which highlights the entry to the home even more.

For a bit more drama they added two lollipop Gardenia trees on the front porch — very pretty.

Cafe lights are fabulous because they always add a festive mood to any garden.

Whether squared or rounded, shaping your shrubs is always a good idea.

Here’s another example of a big statement made with exterior lights — love these over the outdoor dining area.

Happy Monday! Lately, I’ve been inspired to mix influences from South Texas and Mexico into my interiors. It may be due to my recent trip to my hometown on the border of Texas and Mexico but what ever the reason, I love the look! Below, I’ve put together my favorite elements for a very South Texas living room.

Perched on a hilltop overlooking the Pacific Ocean this beautiful villa was built in the 30’s by Wallace Frost after spending a decade in Italy. Owned by Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi, I absolutely love the way they decorated this gorgeous villa. I’ll be honest, I’m a little obsessed with this home.

I love this porch, and the staghorn fern on the wall is incredible!

When Ellen talks about why she loves this home in her book, Ellen DeGeneres Home, she says, “… I think it’s because the house is always surprising. It reveals itself to you in new ways every day. And it’s really how I want to live. It’s not overly manicured or tidy. It’s not overly precious or perfect. And it’s a home that manages to be both spacious and cozy at once.” — I love that!
Happy Friday!

Not only are Agaves extremely easy to maintain and have an excellent sculptural quality, they also add drama to any garden. They grow best in Mediterranean and Southwest climates, but can also be grown in containers in colder climates as long as they are protected in the winter. Agaves are incredibly versatile and look gorgeous in many different garden styles from Mediterranean to traditional. They are possibly one of my favorite plants to add to a garden.

Agaves look fantastic planted with ground cover like sedum or simply planted in gravel, as in the above photo.

I love the contrast between the blue agave and the dark green boxwood.

They are also very fun in containers

I bring them indoors as well

One of the most impressive things to see is when an agave flowers

Some of my favorite Agaves to use in a garden or in containers —
Variegated Attenuata
Whale’s Tongue
‘Blue Glow’
Potatorum
Filifera
Attenuata
Parryi
