It’s not often that I can spend a Monday at a massive antiques market but that’s exactly what I did yesterday! Twice a year, an enormous open-air antiques market takes place in the town of Warrenton. This time I went with a friend and the weather was absolutely perfect! We had a lot of fun but I have to say the highlight for me was our midday picnic. We picked a fabulous place to park and decided to set up shop right behind the car with a view of a pond, some cows and the rolling countryside. Except for the powered motor home about thirty feet away it felt a smidgen like a scene from “Out of Africa”.
A beautiful pool in the Luberon area in Southern France and the view isn’t half bad either! I love the simplicity of it all! Five ingredients total; gravel, cots, some pillows, native stone and green! Perhaps a dip in the pool and then lunch on the terrace? An artichoke and white bean salad with a lemon vinaigrette, fresh bread and a wine from the Luberon area!

This is possibly the best time of year to live in South Texas! The weather is amazing and everything is budding! The Bluebonnets are out and “Fiesta” (San Antonio’s largest party) is around the corner. We can actually open our windows and let the breeze in, it’s marvelous! So, I am off to enjoy it, and an estate sale or two? I hope everyone is enjoying great weather, have a wonderful weekend!

One of my favorite places to shop for home goodies is on La Brea in Los Angeles. The street is riddled with fabulous stores! Maison Midi is one of many but one I have been enjoying for years! You feel like every item you purchase is going towards your vacation home (we of course all have) in the south of France. Every item is wonderful and the colors throughout are amazing! Just next door to Maison Midi is American Rag, where you can find clothes, shoes, etc. Their bags alone are a reason to purchase something. Down the street is one of my all time favorite fabric stores, Diamond Foam & Fabric! They have a great selection of fabrics and if you get there early enough they usually have homemade bread to snack on while you roam the fabric hallways! Between Maison Midi and Diamond Foam and Fabric is Rita Flora where you can grab some fresh flowers for your entry. And after a day of walking up and down La Brea you can end it with a fabulous dinner at Campanile!

I absolutely love this time of year! The weather turns a little warmer and you start to get excited about being outdoors and enjoying the sunshine again! This is also the perfect time to start pruning and planting and getting everything in your garden organized for a great show this spring and summer! Deadhead, prune and fertilize so that plants look their best! If you have questions about gardening visit your local garden store or contact your local Master Gardener hotline. There are obviously too many garden stores/websites to mention but some of my favorites are: Gardens & Big Red Sun (Austin), Thompson & Hanson (Houston), Inner Gardens (Los Angeles). I hope these inspire you as much as they do me!

I do love this picture. I can’t remember what magazine it’s from, it’s likely Elle Decor, but it’s beautiful.

Sometimes when it’s cold outside all I want to do is make some amazing comfort food and call it a day. I’ll sit around the table with good friends and hash out the day or curl up on my favorite chair and watch a great movie. One of my favorite things to make when it’s cold outside is “Garbure”, the hearty soup from southwestern France and the very essence of Béarnaise cooking. Because this soup is eaten all over the southwest the ingredients vary. What people add due to what’s available seasonally might change as well, but like so many dishes, it boils down to personal taste. Because this area is famous for their foie gras and pates, some believe in adding a little confit to the soup at the end. If you choose to do so let me know what you think. The version I usually use is from Gourmet Magazine (May ’04). The only thing I changed was that I used ham shanks instead of ham hocks because there is usually more meat on the shanks. Another tip, which most of you might already know, is to use green cabbage instead of purple, or you will end up (like I did) with purple soup. Another wonderful version is by chef Daniel Boulud. Enjoy it with a thick piece of country bread and slither right into bed or curl up with a good book!
