Several weeks ago, while on the Warner Brother’s lot in Los Angeles, I visited with Celebrity florist, Cathy Ball. She supplies many shows on the WB lot with gorgeous arrangements and more. Today, she was arranging some amazing peonies and hydrangeas for a client. What a perfect opportunity to gather some tips on putting together our own beautiful arrangement. Below, Cathy shows us 4 steps in making a simple yet elegant flower arrangement.

Above, the hydrangeas and peonies. Even the way Cathy has them arranged — waiting to be arranged – is gorgeous (the antique olive buckets are from Big Daddy’s).

Step 1: Select a vase

Step 2: Start with hydrangeas (or whatever you have), and loosely fill in the vase, leaving a whole in the center

Hydrangeas with hole in the center

Step 3: Place a peony between each hydrangea

Step 4: After you’ve layered a peony between each hydrangea, finish off by filling in the center hole with more peonies

Easy & Beautiful!  Thanks Cathy!

The party took place at a friend’s house–a wonderful Tudor style home perched on a small hill in a very cute neighborhood. Candles placed in silver tins lined the pathway leading to the garden and the faint sound of jazz could be heard as you passed through the garden gates.

The hostess, Karla (food stylist, amazing cook and plant lover), and I started work on the garden about a month before the party.

Tree stumps were repurposed as small cocktail tables. A mirror hung on a wall reflecting the roaring fire. Old pieces of driftwood were turned into lamps. And a table, made by Karla’s husband, became the perfect place to set the wine and appetizers.

The weather couldn’t have been more perfect. The smell of bacon-wrapped jalapenos filled the air and forty guests enjoyed a jazz quartet under a full moon.

Maison Midi

Maison Midi

One of my favorite places to shop for home goodies is on La Brea in Los Angeles. The street is riddled with fabulous stores! Maison Midi is one of many but one I have been enjoying for years! You feel like every item you purchase is going towards your vacation home (we of course all have) in the south of France. Every item is wonderful and the colors throughout are amazing! Just next door to Maison Midi is American Rag, where you can find clothes, shoes, etc. Their bags alone are a reason to purchase something. Down the street is one of my all time favorite fabric stores, Diamond Foam & Fabric! They have a great selection of fabrics and if you get there early enough they usually have homemade bread to snack on while you roam the fabric hallways!  Between Maison Midi and Diamond Foam and Fabric is Rita Flora where you can grab some fresh flowers for your entry. And after a day of walking up and down La Brea you can end it with a fabulous dinner at Campanile!
