The flower from the Magnolia Tree (I believe it’s the Magnolia Grandiflora) is a super stunning flower and one of my favorites. Not only are these flowers incredibly gorgeous but they are incredibly fragrant. The only problem is, is that they are usually difficult to find. They aren’t typically found in most flower markets and once they are picked their “vase life” is quite short (maybe 3 days). The great thing about a large Magnolia flower is that you really just need one to make a statement.

They are just incredible flowers

My second post for this Austin project is the laundry room/mud room – one of my favorite spaces to do! In the past laundry rooms were seriously neglected, but these days people are paying a lot more attention to them. We gave this one plenty of attention.

The client picked this very fun trellis wallpaper by Schumacher, and we added 2 gorgeous light fixtures from Pottery Barn as well as various built-ins for storage. The contractor custom-made a glass door so the wallpaper and chandelier could be visible from the kitchen and living room, as well as allow more light in.

The only thing we are waiting for here is the cushion for the bench which will be in same fabric as the one for the breakfast nook bench.

IMG_1844We also had a “butler’s pantry” built the depth of a wine bottle for extra storage for wine, platters, cookbooks and laundry supplies.

For this project, I worked with clients in Austin to design a new kitchen, laundry room and decorate their existing living room. After 10 months of work we are finally done (except for the breakfast bench cushion) and everything worked out beautifully.

Tomorrow, the laundry room makeover.

This past Saturday, I posted this picture of a lovely outdoor dining area. I love the color palette, the feel, just about every inch of this picture. I was so inspired by this photo that I thought I would hunt down some of the items (minus the beautiful Spanish style home).

THE ELEMENTS…

The table below is from Restoration Hardware but World Market, Pottery Barn, West Elm and Summer Classics all have similar ones.

I found this on Pinterest and fell in love with it! Perfect setting for brunch, dinner or just a sip of wine with a friend.

This garden, designed by Rob Steiner, was my favorite on the Pacific Palisades garden tour. One reason is because it felt completely different from the rest of the gardens on the tour. It felt fresh, crisp and his use of color was brilliant. The house was painted a stark white and a soft lemon sorbet color was used on the french doors. In the garden he mirrored the same lemon color in some of the succulents and then used grays and blues for a soothing contrast. The textures and colors all worked beautifully together. I hope my pictures do it  justice.

Last Sunday was the Pacific Palisades annual garden club tour. My first time on this tour was 9 years ago and it continues to be an inspiring tour. Below, are a couple of my favorites, both designed by Jay Griffith.

Tomorrow, my favorite garden from the tour!

One of my favorite items to use in a home, that’s never hard to find or costly but totally makes a room, is the glass hurricane. Whether it’s modern or traditional in style, it can bring a bit of warmth and sophistication to any room.

Of course fans of the Barefoot Contessa will know about the ones on her kitchen island. Lovely.

One of my favorite places to visit is the Huntington Botanical Gardens, especially the Desert Garden. For those of you who love cactus and succulents, below are several photos from my last visit.

Happy Weekend!

In my last post I mentioned that I was going to visit a friend’s garden in Pacific Palisades. Her garden, which I hadn’t seen in ten years, has grown into a amazing garden! It’s situated on a hill-side in Pacific Palisades, a beach community nestled in between Santa Monica and Malibu.

At the end of the day, after a tour of her garden, a garage sale and some wonderful grilled cheese sandwiches, she sent me home with tons of clippings that will help jump-start my own garden here in Southern California.
